What are Inlays & Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom-crafted, highly durable dental restorations—often referred to as partial crowns—used to repair moderate tooth decay, structural damage, or cracked cusps while preserving as much of your healthy, natural tooth structure as possible. An inlay fits securely within the indented chewing surface (cusps) of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more raised cusps to rebuild and strengthen a heavily compromised tooth.

Signs You May Need Inlays & Onlays
When a tooth suffers damage that is too extensive for a standard composite filling, but strong enough that a full-coverage crown is unnecessary, inlays and onlays provide the ideal, tissue-preserving solution. Who is a Candidate for Inlays & Onlays?
A comprehensive professional examination accompanied by low-radiation digital X-rays or high-definition 3D CBCT digital imaging is the only way to accurately evaluate your remaining healthy tooth structure and determine if a partial crown is the right restorative option for your smile. The Inlays & Onlays Procedure at Cleopatra Dental
At Cleopatra Dental, we approach every pediatric procedure with maximum precision, utilizing gentle techniques to ensure your child feels comfortable and secure throughout their visit.
- Step 1: Digital Consultation & Gentle Preparation : Your procedure begins at our Yorba Linda or Riverside practice with a thorough digital assessment. After ensuring your complete comfort with advanced local numbing, your dentist gently removes any decayed tissue or old filling material. We precisely shape the tooth, preserving every millimeter of natural, healthy enamel possible.
- Step 2: Intraoral 3D Scan & Digital Design : Instead of uncomfortable, gag-inducing impression trays, we use a high-speed intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D digital model of your prepared tooth. Using advanced CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, your doctor custom-designs an inlay or onlay tailored to your exact bite and surrounding tooth contours.
- Step 3: Single-Visit CEREC Milling : Your custom restoration design is sent directly to our in-house CEREC Prime Mill system. In just a few minutes, our high-precision milling machine carves your inlay or onlay from a single block of high-strength, tooth-colored ceramic or porcelain that perfectly matches the shade of your natural teeth.
- Step 4: High-Strength Bonding & Polish : Once milled, Dr. George Mirsal or your attending doctor meticulously checks the fit and bite alignment. We then permanently bond the porcelain inlay or onlay to your tooth using high-grade dental adhesives. After a final polish, your tooth's original strength, function, and natural beauty are fully restored in a single visit.
